The Day After – First Workout Woes
Its the day after my first workout. I think its been about a year since I have actually seen the inside of a gym. I must say, it hurts more than I remember and I don’t know if its due to that fact I am older than I was a year ago or because I have a short memory and perhaps cant recall that feeling. Anyway, I hurt, my legs hurt, my back hurts and my arms hurt. I am stiff, sore and think that this is going to be more difficult than my mind allowed me to imagine originally.
Wonder Drugs
Aleve or Motrin is the only answer you need for the post workout pain. They both have the affect of numbing the pain just enough that you can be functional for the day but don’t forget to take with food because it can kill your stomach. You also want to avoid taking these drugs for an extended period of time and you shouldn’t need to take them other than occasionally.
Workout Diet
I was instructed to consume protein immediately after my workout to offset the affect on my muscles and allow for faster recovery. Fortunately for me, the gym has a food court with all kinds of over-priced protein shakes and food. Since I was totally an completely unprepared I had to drop five bucks on a whey protein shake made with fat free yogurt, strawberries and blueberries. It was a good post-workout drink that seemed to help me get through the remainder of the day.
Next Step
My next move is to simply show up at the gym again. I figure that showing up will be enough. If I can force myself to dress for a workout, drive there and walk in the front door then chances are good that I will actually workout.
